Audio Logging Software

Summary

A digital audio logging system for use in broadcast radio.

UK radio stations are legally required to keep records of the last 42 days of their output. A typical solution is to log with video tapes but requires frequent tape changes and it can be difficult to sort through the tapes to retrieve material. Darklog records a station's audio output from a soundcard line input. The recorded audio is stored in a sequence of files on a hard disk in a form that be selectively retrieved at a later date.

Darklog (a fork of darkice) runs on Linux and is capable of 24x7 logging (typically onto a RAID device). Darklog has been developed at Radio Warwick has been in continuous operation there and several other radio stations for several years proving to be very reliable.
